The Artist’s Touch
When it comes to home finishes, we honor the maker’s hand. And nothing answers a desire for the unique better than slightly imperfect artisan tile, whether molded, cut, painted or glazed. If you’re a perfectionist, they may not be for you (and wavy forms and erratic edges can make the installer curse). But we love all things wabi-sabi, because life is messy and the constant demand for perfection takes a toll. Here are some of our favorites. — Babs Rodriguez
Southlake-based Riad’s cement tile is made by craftsmen who specialize in encaustic techniques. Variations in color and shapes are their hallmark; this Trident Blue has a powerful pull. Just know the tiles must be sealed after installation. For more info, visit riadtile.com. Photo by Margaret Brinson Wright
Handmade Moroccan, or zellige, tile has elevated imperfection for centuries. Exclusive to Ann Sacks, the Idris by Aït Manos (“The Tribe of the Hands”) collection is drawn, chiseled and glazed by sixth-generation artisans. Subtle variations reflect the light to create a sense of motion. Available in bright, neutral and metallic glazes. Photos courtesy of Ann Sacks
