Cool name, warm heart
Given his icy blue eyes and soft, snow-white fur, it’s easy to understand why Glacier, the resident dog at gift shop Brown Bag Etc., is occasionally mistaken by young visitors for a wolf.
Despite his wildly good looks, the Siberian husky-German shepherd mix is 100 percent domesticated. In addition to calmly greeting customers, Glacier puts his refined sensibilities on display by keeping his white fur pristine — he so dislikes getting dirty that he jumps over puddles. He has been with Brown Bag Etc. owner Haley Wilson since he was a puppy. After she purchased the long-running gift shop in late 2016, Wilson set out to find a friendly shop dog to keep her company. A litter of husky-shepherd mixes posted by an acquaintance on Instagram caught her eye. Among the pups, Wilson and her boyfriend found their perfect match, a mellow personality who’s really into napping. The couple named him for one of their favorite travel destinations, Glacier National Park. Since then, Wilson has moved her shop to a new storefront on Hulen Street in Fort Worth and has expanded its stock from sorority and fraternity goods to a selection of T-shirts, bath bombs, candles, accessories, sweaters and a few things for dogs, too.
When he’s not meeting and greeting shoppers and employees, Glacier plays with his plush toys or naps on the thick dog bed nestled in the back room, by Wilson’s desk. That’s also where she keeps his basket of toys.
“Right now, his favorite toy is his octopus — or what’s left of it,” says Wilson, as Glacier reaches for the disembodied pair of purple arms.
