The shuddering beneath me stops and a tidal wave of relaxation rolls out of my brain and down my body, leaving tingles in its wake. Am I levitating? In orbit? Blindfolded and listening to far-out sound effects in my headphones, it’s easy to lose track of space and time.
But I’m not floating into the cosmos, I only feel like it. I’m at the CR Vitality Studio at Canyon Ranch Spa, receiving Shiftwave neurostimulation in a zero-gravity recliner.
Developed by the U.S. Army to treat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, Shiftwave delivers pulsing waves of pressure at precise frequencies to the entire body. You can choose from 40 preprogrammed treatments, each designed to provide a distinct blend of relaxation, energy, focus and sleep support. Sessions last 10 minutes to an hour, and you control the vibration intensity with an armrest dial. Turned all the way up, it’s like being inside a jet engine. It shakes my teeth, my tummy, the tiny bones in my inner ear. I love it. I rise from the recliner revived and perfectly present, my anxiety evaporated.
Neurostimulation is just one of the futuristic treatments at Canyon Ranch Wellness Club + Spa in Fort Worth’s Cultural District. Canyon Ranch operates multiple destination resorts nationwide, but this three-story facility represents a new urban model. It is the first with CR Vitality, an airy recovery space on the top floor with high-tech healing therapies. You can enhance circulation with compression jet boots, stimulate healing on an electromagnetic mat or de-stress in an infrared sauna cocoon—which I’m trying next.
The large white capsule looks like something astronauts sleep inside for the long journey to Mars. Bright red lights radiate from within. I lift the shell-like cover and climb inside its gaping mouth for hyperthermic conditioning: elevate my body temperature to boost heart health, soothe my muscles and burn a few calories to boot. I settle into the warm, gently vibrating bed with my head on a pillow. A fan blows oxygen-enriched air on my face, and my thoughts begin to wander. Do Texans even need heat therapy? Don’t we get it every summer, whether we want it or not? It feels fantastic, but does science back up the sci-fi machine’s purported benefits? Actually, yes. Respected medical organizations attest to the therapeutic effects of infrared saunas.
I explore the sprawling fitness center on the first floor then head to the second-floor spa, home to Fort Worth’s only Vichy shower bed. It’s time for my Hungarian Mud Wrap Ritual with massage therapist Abigail, who has a voice like melting butter and smooth, deliberate mannerisms. Her favorite word is magical. Hydrotherapy is ancient, but the Vichy table is cutting-edge. I lie on its water-filled mattress, much firmer than the 1980s waterbeds beloved by bachelor uncles. An L-shaped bar sprouts from the foot of the bed and runs horizontally over my body. Six adjustable shower heads stretch down its length alongside color-changing LED lights.
I expect high-pressure shower sprays, but instead, they’re soft and gentle. Abigail kicks things off with an exfoliating scrub and rinse before we get down and dirty with the therapeutic mud. I always liked making mud pies as a child, but this is no common Texas sludge. Warm and silky, it’s from a thermal lake in Hungary. I’m reminded of the mineral-rich mud in the Dead Sea I smeared on myself in Israel, except there’s no manky smell or hippies floating nearby.
Now covered in the dark gray goo, Abigail assembles a tent around my body for a steam session. Lights above me shine purple, then pink, then blue. She massages my scalp with sweet-smelling oil, and I slip into a dreamy daze. Abigail slowly washes away the mud with the showerheads above, carefully pointing them this way and that, adjusting the heat and pressure.
Abigail hands me a toasty towel and we head to a dry room for my massage. Vichy also supplies the spa’s top-of-the-line massage beds, spongy yet so supportive. Later, I wrap myself in a fleece-lined robe and am escorted to my favorite space in the spa, or maybe the world: the relaxation lounge. Hushed and dimly lit, it’s a temple of coziness with pillowy chairs and daybeds separated by gauzy curtains. Candles flicker in the corners and thick carpeting soaks up any sounds. I make a cup of rooibos tea and snuggle under a velvety blanket. It’s pure bliss, even … magical.
I end my day in the women’s thermal area, dabbling in the hot tub and steam room before stretching out in the sauna. Here I breathe deeply; I can just be. From futuristic treatments to the simple beauty of the present moment, pausing for self-care at Canyon Ranch fosters your health and wellness—without a doubt, the greatest luxury of them all.
