Pillars of Strength

Our go-to for the dinner table are chunky candles. Unscented. If it’s fragrance you’re looking for, check out the next page. Otherwise, we’re in an aroma-free zone when food is involved. And yes, the same goes for florals.
After seeing an unfortunate accident with a tipped-over candelabra — no fire, but that wax went everywhere — we are definite fans of the wide style. And while the faux-flame look has definitely improved, nothing beats the real thing.
We spotted these stone heavyweights at House Essential. And we do mean heavy. The large style could easily be used for arm curls. The smaller design allows you to use either a small pillar or, when flipped over, a taper, which seems to flicker in and out of favor. We love not only the heft but the shapes, which complement each other. Mix and match them with brushed metal holders for a sophisticated tabletop or buffet. $200 for the large (they come as a pair); the small size is $40 or four for $150. Find them at the new Fort Worth location of House Essential.
