Known for her knack for putting clients at ease, she masterfully blends light, location, and emotion to craft timeless, authentic images while also mentoring emerging photographers. In this Q&A, Tracy shares her journey, insights on trends, and advice for couples seeking authentic wedding photography.
We love your work! Can you share a bit about yourself and what inspired you to become a wedding photographer?
I’ve always loved storytelling through art, but wedding photography wasn’t part of the original plan. After earning my photography degree, I expected to teach—until I photographed a few friends’ weddings and said yes to my first real client. That day changed everything. I knew I’d found what I was meant to do.
How did you establish your career in the wedding photography industry, and what’s been the most rewarding moment so far?
After a few years of photographing weddings on my own, I knew I wanted to build a team that was equally passionate about capturing stories, so I could serve even more couples and their growing families. That’s how Lightly Photography started, as my associate team. Over the years we’ve continued to grow. Today I have two brands, Tracy Autem Photography – the team – which serves our wonderful wedding clients, and Lightly Photography, which captures social and corporate events as well as portraits. Twenty years in, I think the most rewarding thing is the lasting relationships I’ve built with both my team members, my fellow vendors, and all the incredible clients, who have allowed me to capture so many milestones in their lives.
How would you describe your approach to capturing weddings?
Organized, calm, and intentional. We guide when it helps, and step back when it matters most. Our goal is to build trust so our couples feel comfortable, relaxed, and fully present.
What’s the first piece of advice you’d give brides when choosing a wedding photographer?
Connect with the person, not just the portfolio. You spend more time with your photographer than almost anyone else on your wedding day—they should feel like someone you want around.
What are some of the top wedding photography trends you’re seeing up and coming?
Direct flash, bold editing, and a more documentary feel. Couples want photos that feel effortless and real—less posed, more energy.
Are there any photography trends or styles you think are fading out or that brides should reconsider?
Trends aren’t bad—they can give your day personality. Just be sure your photographer balances trends with timelessness. Your gallery should reflect your vibe and hold up years from now.
What’s your favorite moment or detail to capture during a wedding, and why does it resonate with you?
The in-between moments—hands held tightly, laughter off to the side, the emotional walk back up the aisle. Those unplanned, real moments tell the story better than anything staged.
What advice would you give to couples to ensure their photos reflect their personality and the vibe of their wedding?
You want to trust your photographer. We love taking time to get to know our couples before the wedding day, so we can capture them in their element, and their unique personalities. As for advice, let go of the little things, and stay close to each other during the day. That connection shows up in every frame, and allows you to truly soak in the time you’ll share together.
What’s one often-overlooked photography element (e.g., lighting, timing, location) that can elevate a wedding album?
Lighting. It’s everything. Whether we’re creating it or using what’s available, the right light makes all the difference in how your photos look and feel.
What are common mistakes brides make when planning their photography, and how can they avoid them?
Not allowing enough time. Everything takes longer on a wedding day. Build in a little buffer, and work with your photographer to create a realistic timeline that flows.
Are there any venues or locations you love shooting at, and what makes them ideal for wedding photography?
So many. The Crescent Hotel, Bowie House, Robert Carr Chapel, River Crest. Great light, beautiful architecture, and spaces that offer versatility for portraits and candids always make for dynamic images.
How do you collaborate with other vendors (e.g., planners, videographers) to ensure a seamless photography experience?
We are lucky to be friends with many of the incredible people we work with, but we treat all vendors as the teammates they are. Good communication, mutual respect, and the shared goal of creating an amazing day for our couples guide all our interactions, especially leading up to the day. Early communication helps us create a positive experience for the bride and groom, as well as their guests.
How do you handle challenging conditions (e.g., bad weather, low light) to still deliver stunning photos?
We plan ahead, bring the right gear, and stay flexible. No matter the weather or light, we’re ready with backup plans and know how to adapt.
What’s the most memorable wedding you’ve photographed, and what made it stand out?
That’s tough—so many good ones. But the ones I remember most are full of emotion, energy, and couples who are all-in on celebrating. A packed dance floor and a lot of heart go a long way.
For brides feeling overwhelmed by photo options (e.g., poses, shot lists), how do you help them plan their coverage?
We simplify it. We talk about what matters most to them, then create a plan that flows naturally and includes plenty of time for capturing genuine moments.
What role does editing play in your process, and how do you ensure the final photos feel timeless?
Editing should enhance, not distract. We aim for clean, true-to-life colors and skin tones. That way you’ll still love your photos decades from now.
How do you stay inspired and keep your photography fresh in the ever-evolving wedding industry?
By staying curious. Watching light, noticing details, connecting with each couple’s unique energy. There’s always something new to see—even in familiar places.
What’s one piece of wisdom you wish every bride knew before booking their wedding photographer?
Photos are the only thing that lasts beyond the day. Choose someone who makes you feel at ease and who you trust to tell your story.
