Fort Worthians who frequent Camp Bowie Boulevard were sure to be familiar with Park + Eighth and its owner, the designer Christina Phillips.
Earlier this year, Phillips closed the 7-year-old shop, which boasted a sophisticated mix of restored vintage pieces, accessories and fine art, and returned to her design roots. She’s come back with CMP Designs, Inc. — the business that she originally opened in 1993.
The design and renovation company specializes in creating warm and welcoming environments, regardless of style and size.
“We do cozy from 3,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet,” Phillips said.
Born and reared in Cowtown, Phillips graduated from TCU with a degree in interior design in 1990. She became licensed in 1993 as a registered interior designer in Texas after working as the lead designer for a large architecture firm in Houston. She and her husband, Bryce, married the same year and returned to Fort Worth where she started CMP Designs, Inc., allowing her to work from home and start a family.
Her work as a designer made her recognize the lack of design resources in Fort Worth. Phillips always enjoyed the thrill of the hunt for great furniture and décor. She took that skillset and design experience and opened Park + Eighth at 4804 Camp Bowie Blvd.
As the principal designer at CMP Designs, Phillips offers ground-up construction to remodels to one-room makeovers. Phillips has vast building experience and the ability to act as contractor on certain projects and is certified with the National Council for Interior Design.
Another benefit of returning to CMP Designs is the flexibility it provides Phillips’ schedule.
“This shift has allowed me the freedom to spend time with my new grandson, who has stolen my heart,” she explained. “My family is the most important thing to me and having more time to be part of their lives and help them at every turn is my priority. This new schedule gives me time to do both. I am so excited about this new phase of my life.”
In her designs, Phillips likes to mix texture, color and various styles. “I like to add something a little unexpected in each space.”
CMP allows her to focus on one project. “I typically only take on one design/build at a time in order to give my client 110% of my attention and focus,” she said. “Other times, I can handle two smaller projects at once. Timing is everything in this business.”
Although Phillips’ personal style is distinctively her own, she prides herself in adapting to her client’s tastes.
“I’ve never worked myself into a specific niche because I feel it is limiting to my client base,” she said. “If someone wants traditional, we do traditional. If they want modern, we do modern. I do, however, toss in a little of the unexpected in order to create something unique regardless of style.”
One of Phillips’ favorite jobs to date was a Santa Barbara-style home in Westover that she worked on for a repeat client. The owner brought in Brent Hull of Hull Homes and Austin Bewley of Dovetail Design Studio.
“I love working with people that have a fun vision,” she said. “It was a dream.”
