Boomerang Boutique brings curated midcentury modern finds to Park Place

Boomerang Boutique, located on Park Place near the hospital district, is the antithesis of your run-of-the-mill antique store. This was all part of owners Misty and Jonathan Bermudez’s plan.
The retailer specializes in midcentury modern furniture and decor with splashes of art deco thrown in for good measure. There are even select clothing finds—hello 1970s faux fur trimmed coat—from eras gone by.
“My mission when designing this store was that it would not look like a typical antique or vintage shop, with its piles and stacks of cluttered objects haphazardly placed on shelves and the floor in hopes that someone would see some potential in it and buy it,” Misty says. “I wanted an organized shop made up of vignettes, defined spaces with furniture and decor arranged as they might be seen in someone’s home.”
A Sofa & A Dream
Boomerang Boutique began with a sofa.
Not just any sofa, of course, but a Jean Gillon Amazonas Italma with Brazilian Rosewood framing cream leather cushions. Misty, a seasoned vintage shopper and seller, could hardly believe her eyes. After inquiring about the piece, she learned it was $275 with a matching $60 ottoman, and half off to boot. These sofas are usually priced around $8,000 – $10,000, so she bought it on the spot and went home to tell her husband.
When she informed Jonathan of the fabulous find, he responded, “Why did you buy a sofa? We don’t need one; where are we going to put it?”
“We aren’t going to keep it, we are going to sell it,” Misty said. “It’s worth much more than what I paid for it.”
Misty did just that. The Bermudezes took the leap and created a business.
Midcentury curves, art deco accents, and a touch of nostalgia—each piece here has a story waiting to be told.
Old Fashioned Love
Jonathan and Misty’s first date was a foreshadowing of things to come.
They had planned a hike for their first date, but Texas weather intervened making that plan impossible.
“When he showed up at my door that morning, after a few uncomfortable first-time interactions, we discussed what else we could do,” Misty says. “He asked what I typically did on Saturdays … that’s right, our first date was spent estate sale shopping. Little did he know this was to become his life!”
The couple married three months later.
Ready, Set, Shop
Boomerang Boutique opened on Nov. 30, 2024. The Bermudezes spent their first wedding anniversary, Nov. 11, perfecting the shop for a grand opening.
Together, they spent countless hours going to auctions, estate sales and thrift shops to stock up with inventory.
The Bermudezes pride themselves on seeing the beauty in old objects.
“I’m not a designer by any means, I just love beautiful things and want them to be appreciated,” Misty says. “I can see something old and falling apart but fall in love with it because I see what I can make with it.”
Boomerang carries several couches and chairs that have been artfully re-upholstered to bring the pieces back to their former glory.
“All I see is the design, the lines, the curves and the quality of its structure,” Misty says. “This quality no longer exists in a lot of modern-day furniture.”
While her specialty is midcentury modern furniture and decor, it is not the boutique’s only offerings. The Bermudezes carry a wide range of styles and items at the shop. Misty admits that she would never limit her personal home to just midcentury modern, so she will always carry more than one genre of decor.
“Most of what we carry in the shop are items I would put in my own home,” she says. “I just don’t have room.”
Among the re-upholstered couches and chairs, inlaid credenzas, artwork, stunning stemware and other accoutrement, you can find rocks and fossils. Misty’s dad was a geologist and passed down a love of interesting natural objects.
The Bermudezes would love to become a go-to source for local homeowners and designers.
“Our mission is that we can offer a little bit of something beautiful to just about anyone who walks in,” Misty says. “I believe a home should be a collection of interesting and beautiful things that go well together and reflect the personalities that live there. Have objects in a room that draw the eye, that capture the attention of others, that create conversation. You can find that here at Boomerang Boutique.”
A space designed with intention—vintage finds arranged in thoughtful vignettes, each evoking a sense of home.
