Flights of Fancy

We miss the butterflies. This year’s Fort Worth Botanic Garden butterfly event is on hold because of COVID. And the number of monarchs — our state insect — traveling through Texas, both to and from Mexico, continues to decline. The numbers aren’t any better in states such as California. In December, federal officials suggested moving the monarchs to the endangered species list. Both bad weather and lack of breeding grounds are to blame. So, even on a cold, rainy day, it was worth the effort to stop in at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park and walk through the sculpture Transition to Beauty, by Linda Lewis-Roark. The metal design, made up of butterflies of all shapes and colors and installed in 2017, made the gray day a little brighter. Here’s hoping we’ll see some of the real thing in the spring.
