Walk On Water

The Boardwalk at Lake Weatherford wins our vote for “coolest place to take an evening stroll.” Others obviously agree, as we pass a dad pushing a stroller, a man gently guiding his elderly mother, a couple of anglers with poles at the ready and two women out for a power walk on a weekday. Touted as the country’s longest floating boardwalk since opening in 2020, it stretches a little under a mile with the interlocking hard plastic sections creating a fairly smooth surface that gives just enough to remind you that you are standing on water. We watch as birds swoop down on the giant lily pads to feast and hear the splashes of unseen critters. The scenery changes drastically as you leave the wooded part of the trail to head out over the lake. When you see the lotus plants — you’ll actually smell them first, as the blooms give off a pleasant aroma — try not to gasp at the magnitude of the scene.
