Meet Three Sons: The Texas brand redefining modern Western style

When Shelby West started cutting Pendleton fabric at her kitchen table in Flint, Texas, she just wanted to make something beautiful, something that reflected her family’s love for the Western lifestyle and satisfied her lifelong creative streak.

Perhaps it was a tall order, but today, Shelby’s brand, Three Sons, is redefining Western wear with its blend of top-tier materials, modern designs and classic detailing. And, as its name suggests, it all began with family.

“I always say it’s a family brand,” Shelby says. “My boys see everything I’m doing, and I want them to be part of it all.”

A native of the Galveston area, Shelby grew up in small-town Texas. After college, she and her husband, Jacob — a Tyler optometrist — moved to East Texas to start both a business and a family.

“I got my degree in graphic design and started a promotional product company right out of college,” she says. “For 20 years, Shelby Specialties was my full-time business. I sold logo merchandise to companies.”

That background in design and branding laid the foundation for what would come next. However, it was Shelby’s life at home with her husband and their three boys — Colt, Collin and Crew — that gave the future brand its soul.

“We wanted to raise the boys on some land, have horses and get involved in rodeo,” she says. “Now all three of them are team ropers.”

Watching her sons compete under the bright lights of the rodeo arena inspired her to create something of her own. “I want them to see me working hard,” Shelby says. “When they’re practicing roping, I tell them to set goals. Don’t just show up. I want them to see that same drive in me.”

The idea for Three Sons was born in 2021 during an anniversary trip to Big Bend with her husband. Shelby personalized a denim jacket by sewing a piece of Pendleton-branded wool onto it. The vibrant colors and classic Western motif was an instant hit.

A few years later, Shelby began experimenting with other pieces. In 2023, when the Texas heat was unseasonably stifling ahead of an upcoming trunk show in Round Top, Shelby added denim vests to her collection. And soon after, a long vintage blue suede skirt she found at a western store in Montana, called Moo Country, sparked another idea.

“About the third time someone asked me where I got it, I thought, I’ve got to come out with my own skirt,” she says. “That’s when I found someone who could help me import Italian suede leathers.”

The subsequent Italian suede skirt became an instant bestseller, with a shorter version in production and set to arrive soon.

As Shelby continued attending antique shows and markets, she crossed paths with Wendy Kunkle, the current owner of Kemo Sabe. Wendy noticed the logo on Shelby’s hat and asked about it.

“She said, ‘You should come pop up with us,’” Shelby recalls.

That invitation led to Shelby’s first trunk show with Kemo Sabe, and over the next two years, she completed 14 more. Those pop-ups placed Three Sons directly in front of a national audience of Western fashion devotees.

Another serendipitous Round Top meeting connected her with one of Texas’s best-known designers: Kendra Scott.

“I saw Kendra in a store and thought, this is it. I have to tell her about my brand,” Shelby says.

She said a prayer, and after bravely approaching her, Scott’s assistant took Shelby’s information and the group parted ways. The chance encounter left Shelby elated, but without expectations of a follow-up meeting. So, when Scott’s team purchased a jacket and vest shortly afterwards, and the brand expressed interest in selling the items, it was the shock of Shelby’s life.

Within weeks, Three Sons jackets, vests, and skirts were shipped to Austin for the grand opening of Kendra Scott’s Yellow Rose boutique. Today, Shelby’s designs are carried in all three Yellow Rose locations in Austin, Dallas and Houston.

“It was such an honor,” Shelby says. “To see something I made in those stores — it was surreal.”

Though Shelby calls East Texas home, Fort Worth has always been a touchstone for her creatively, and her brand has deep respect for the city’s Western fashion scene.

“In Fort Worth, you’ve got to dress the part,” she says with a laugh. “You can’t go to the Stockyards without boots and a hat.”

She has hosted trunk shows with Hale House and now sells through The Maverick in the Stockyards, one of the city’s best-known Western retailers. The Fort Worth connections, she says, have been invaluable.

“I’ve met amazing Fort Worth designers like Jenya Renée and Kori Green through trunk shows and Round Top,” Shelby says. “Once, after a photo shoot in Fort Worth, I ended up at dinner at the new Cattlemen’s Steak House when Taylor Sheridan walked in. I thought, this day couldn’t end any better.”

As Three Sons continues to grow, Shelby’s focus has shifted from constant travel to refining her product line and scaling her business. Her assistant now helps with the trunk shows while Shelby develops new collections and wholesales to boutiques nationwide.

“I couldn’t stop creating,” she says. “At night I’d stay up thinking, what’s next?”

The latest answer to that question is her Game Day Collection — a line of her Italian suede short skirts, dyed in precise collegiate shades, expected to launch in 2026.

And this month, Shelby and her team will head west for Cowboy Christmas at the National Finals Rodeo. It’s a full-circle moment for her as a designer, and as a mom, as her son qualified to team rope at the junior rodeo event taking place at the same time.

“That’s what this brand is all about,” she says. “Family, hard work and chasing big dreams.”

From its Pendleton beginnings to its Italian suede sophistication, Three Sons has evolved into a symbol of modern Western luxury. But for Shelby West, it remains what it’s always been — a family story told through fabric, craftsmanship and love of heritage.

“I love taking something classic and giving it a modern twist,” she says. “It’s about honoring where we come from but also showing where we’re going.”

For Shelby, that road leads straight through the heart of Texas — with her three sons riding alongside.
