Dinner service (and book club) returns at Grapevine’s Mason & Dixie

From fried chicken to hot-weather-perfect salads, owner/chef Beth Newman has brought old favorites along with new surprises to the menu at her downtown Grapevine restaurant. The bistro discontinued dinner service during the pandemic, but Newman is happy to be back for evening service, which sometimes includes live music on the weekends. If you’re craving comfort food, go for the Gulf shrimp and Parmesan grits or the substantial dinner of fried chicken (or pulled pork), mashed potatoes, Cajun gravy, collard greens and a buttermilk biscuit with honey. Newman’s brined chicken breast is fork tender, with breading that magically manages to stay crispy. A lighter option is the Shrimp Louie Salad, loaded with greens and topped with cherry tomatoes, English cucumber, hard-boiled eggs, radish slices, capers and poached Gulf shrimp topped with Cajun remoulade. Drizzle the works with a little vinaigrette for a hearty meal. Dinner service is from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Check with Newman for details about her monthly book club.
