Here Lyeth: Grave Rubbings by Ann Parker and Avon Neal
History is written in stone — and preserved on paper — in Here Lyeth: Grave Rubbings by Ann Parker and Avon Neal at The Carter. The exhibition brings together more than 20 grave rubbings created by Parker and Neal from colonial-era tombstones, capturing the elaborate imagery and hand-carved details once used to memorialize the dead. Winged figures, skeletons and other centuries-old symbols of mortality become striking works of art in their own right, offering a haunting look at early American ideas about death, remembrance and the passage of time. Here Lyeth remains on view through Nov. 8.
