The winding drive along Forest Park Boulevard north of I-30 has always been a scenic one, thanks mainly to the Trinity River, which runs parallel to the street. Months ago, we spotted what looked like a series of five steel origami structures on the embankment near the water treatment plant. Beauty in Becoming by Lynné Bowman Cravens represents the five steps of creating a scissor-tailed flycatcher, done in 8-foot-tall aluminum and painted white to contrast against the green grass and blue sky (pictured here is the last in the series). A common bird in Texas, the flycatcher is known for its long tail and fierce defense of its habitat. Commissioned by Fort Worth Public Art, the subject of the sculpture by the Texas-born artist was inspired by a spotting of the birds on an early site visit. For drivers and those using the Trinity Trail, the artworks are meant to be a roadside attraction, perhaps slowing you down for a few seconds. Or you can park nearby at Rotary Plaza and carefully cross the street for an up-close look at the “paper folds” of each piece (they were fabricated by Ion Art in Austin).
