Cardamom Matcha Cookies

Bodega South Main, Tasha Monticure’s grocery/deli, is one of our favorite grab-and-go spots for salads, dips and housemade soups. The green chili, sweet potato and chicken soup is our go-to sustenance in cool weather. Her whipped feta with roasted tomatoes is a favorite snack when paired with crackers and enjoyed with a glass of wine. When time permits, we grab a seat at one of the cafe tables and get a made-to-order signature sandwich such as the goat cheese and roasted red pepper panini or a hefty wedge of quiche. And we’ll always make room for dessert if Monticure’s roasted beet chocolate cake is available. When we asked for a recipe that would appeal to our baking-challenged self, she offered these glittery sugar-topped cookies that also sparkle with flavor, but aren’t too sweet. You can purchase matcha and cardamom powder in small quantities at stores with a bulk spice/tea section.

Cardamom Matcha Cookies

Makes about two dozen

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Granulated sugar and cardamom powder for coating dough before and after baking

In a stand mixer or using a hand-held version, cream together softened butter, sugar and matcha until smooth.

Add egg. Mix until combined, scraping down bowl as needed.

In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Add dry ingredients to butter and sugar, and mix until dough forms. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Scoop dough to form small balls; roll each in mixture of sugar and cardamom. On a baking sheet, place balls 2 inches apart.

Bake 13 to 15 minutes until edges are set. Allow to cool for 5 minutes and dip again in sugar cardamom mixture.
