Sole Power

Story and photos by Meda Kessler

For those who love a nice kitten heel or classic pump, we’re here to warn you. Lug-sole boots refuse to go away. They will not be confined to rough terrain and are quite comfortable taking on the mean streets in the city. These sturdy statement-makers are more than happy to partner with everything from a billowy skirt to sleek knits. Instead of basic black, we like these lighter numbers. Gucci’s GG ankle boots feature an uber-thick platform sole and heel (there’s also an incredible serpent motif on the bottom of each shoe), canvas uppers with a mini GG motif and white quilted leather padding around the ankle ($980, Neiman Marcus Fort Worth). Lightweight leather Can Can boots from Spanish-brand Alohas are available in a wintry white with a thick rubber sole. They come with an extra pair of shoelaces in velvet and are quite comfortable. ($140, JAG Jewelry and Goods). Just beware of dirty streets and mud puddles.
