CHRISTIE ECKLER

Founder and Principal Strategist

CME Consulting LLC

I founded CME Consulting LLC, which specializes in Strategy Development, Fund & Resource Development and Training & Capacity Building for mission-driven organizations. With more than 20 years in nonprofit leadership and social work, I launched the company with one purpose: to help those who help others. My work supports leaders in creating a sustainable impact while preventing burnout.

PRESSING QUESTIONS

How I knew this was my passion

I realized my passion when I saw how often helpers feel unsupported. That lit a fire in me to champion those who help others — so they feel seen, valued and empowered.

Biggest challenges in my career

Seeing mission-driven people burn out from lack of support has been a major challenge — and motivation. It led me to pursue a PhD focused on better supporting those who support others.

My first job and what it taught me

My first job at a fast food restaurant taught me hard work, teamwork, dignity, adaptability and grace under pressure — foundational lessons that have shaped how I lead and serve others today.

A nonprofit I wish more people knew about

Preserve International, Roundup for Autism (beneficiary: Autism Treatment Center), Partnership Home, and Camp Fire First Texas each embody shared values of growth, dignity, and opportunity — supporting people as they learn, work, and live fully in their communities.

What keeps me coming back to my job every day

What keeps me coming back is knowing I’m helping mission-driven people make a meaningful impact. Supporting their growth, solving challenges and fueling purpose-driven work brings me joy, energy, and deep professional fulfillment.

Best career moment so far

One of my best career moments has been seeing my graduate students step into their purpose — changing lives and communities. Knowing I played a small part in their journey is deeply meaningful and humbling.

A skill I never expected to need in this field

As a social worker, I didn’t realize how essential fundraising and storytelling would be. Sharing authentic stories to connect hearts and inspire support has become a vital part of creating lasting impact.

One practice I use to maintain my mental health

One practice I use to maintain my mental health is not taking things personally. I reflect, apologize if needed, and remember others react based on their own lived experiences — not mine.

Best advice I ever received

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable, and never stop learning.” Sue Matkin told me that in the late ’90s, and it stuck. Growth and leadership always live just outside our comfort zones.

The one thing I wish people knew about my field

I wish people knew fundraising isn’t just about causes — it’s about a donor’s journey, values, and legacy. It’s deeply relational work that, like social work, is rooted in trust and purpose.

The first thing I do to course-correct when I hit a wall

When I hit a wall, I pause, breathe, and ask what truly matters. Clarity comes when I reconnect with purpose—because the wall usually appears when I’m working outside of it.
