LISA SCHUESSLER
Chief Operating Officer
Gladney Center for Adoption
After originally aspiring to work in fashion or advertising, serendipitous connections led me to a fulfilling 17-year career at the Gladney Center for Adoption. I currently serve as Chief Operating Officer, and I am deeply committed to being a voice for children waiting for their forever families, ensuring their stories are heard and their futures are filled with hope.
PRESSING QUESTIONS
How I knew this was my passion
I realized this was my true passion when my own life story came full circle, guiding me to serve women, families and children with purpose and heart.
Biggest challenges in my career
Learning to give myself grace and accept that I can’t be everywhere at once. There’s an unspoken bond among working moms striving to be present for their families while leaving their professional mark. Staying focused and aligned with my priorities has been essential.
My first job and what it taught me
At Springhill Catfish in Pflugerville, Texas, my first job taught me that no perfume could mask the smell of hush puppies, while also instilling in me the importance of service and teamwork.
A nonprofit I wish more people knew about
My husband served in the Marine Corps, and we recently experienced The Medal of Honor Museum, honoring “Ordinary Americans” who demonstrated “Extraordinary Actions” of remarkable valor. A powerful tribute to our heroes’ courage and sacrifice.
What keeps me coming back to my job every day
I show up each day to do what I love, with the belief that I can still make a difference. When you feel you have something unique to contribute, keep showing up — because that’s where impact and fulfillment align.
Best career moment so far
My best career moment is knowing I started at the entry level, continuously learned, raised my hand, shared my voice, and grew. Contributing my time, talents, and resources to impact women, families and children brings me immense pride.
A skill I never expected to need in this field
I lead The Gladney Cup, a biennial charity golf tournament held at U.S. Open courses. I never imagined the honor of walking the grounds of prestigious clubs and building nationwide partnerships — all for a game I’ve never played, but wholeheartedly agree is the best game ever played — in support of the mission I love.
One practice I use to maintain my mental health
I need quiet moments to recharge, then walk, pray or talk it out. I strive to avoid overcommitting, learning to say no, and focus on doing things out of joy, not obligation.
Best advice I ever received
My Granny Ruthie Baby had a remarkable ability to find beauty in the simplest of moments. She would repeat, “What a beautiful day. Let’s do it again tomorrow.” To the point & powerful: focus on joy.
The one thing I wish people knew about my field
Nonprofit work is seen as passionate but not always strategic. It’s the invisible thread connecting us, solving complex issues and ensuring a seat at the table for those who are often overlooked.
The first thing I do to course-correct when I hit a wall
I step back to gain a broader perspective. I then choose whether to go over it, around it, through it or wait for the right moment. There’s always a way forward — sometimes, it’s just a matter of adjusting the lens.
